A Prayer To Equip You With The Armor of God

We are living in some serious times. Times in which sin and its unfortunate consequences seem to be totally out of control. The enemy is relentless and he continues to attack us with sickness, hatred from others, abuse, broken relationships, financial struggles, depression, loneliness, feelings of low self-worth, shame, and so much more. It’s evident we are in the middle of a war, a spiritual war, but what are we to do to combat these attacks? How are we to fight back?

A Battle Lost

There once was a father who had to go away on a business trip. This trip required him to be away from his family for several weeks. So being the loving and responsible father that he was, he made sure that his family would be taken care of during his absence. So he provided them with everything that they would need along with a list of instructions to guide them while he was away.

After several weeks had passed and his business was complete, this father eagerly headed back home. He was so excited to be reunited with his wife and his children. Yet strangely enough when he opened the door to his home, he wasn’t greeted by the cheerful sounds of children, or the warm embrace of his wife. Instead he opened the door and found his family beaten and bruised. His wife looked like a shell of herself as she sat on the floor in the kitchen barely able to move. His boys were slumped down on the couch with scars on their faces and cuts on their knees.

The father was horrified as he looked at his family. He knew exactly what had happened to them. They had been attacked. So with tears streaming down his face he looked towards the bay window and noticed a pile of equipment that had been untouched.

This pile of equipment consisted of military gear designed to protect his family from any and every attacker that might come their way. Yet for some reason they never even attempted to put it on. And with a broken heart the father cried out, “Why? Why didn’t you follow my instructions. Everything that you needed for your protection was right here at your fingertips. Why?”

And similarly this is the same question God is asking us. He’s provided us with every piece of equipment that we need to fight off the attacks of the enemy. It’s freely available to us. Yet it’s up to us to choose to use it.

The 6 Pieces of the Armor of God

In Ephesians 6:10-20 Paul provides us with a list of the special protective armor that God makes available to us. Each piece is designed perfectly to help us withstand the attacks of the enemy and to stand victoriously in the midst of spiritual warfare. To help you in your spiritual journey I’ve provided a special download entitled, “The Armor of God.” It’s designed to help you remember the importance of each piece. 1. Belt of Truth

Truth represents God and His word. The Bible lets us know that Jesus or truth has the power to set us free from all of the chains of the enemy. The belt of truth allows us to get closer to our God by surrounding ourselves with His truth.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32.

2. Breastplate of Righteousness

I hate to tell you this, but if your protective breastplate was dependent upon your righteousness, then you my friend are in a world of trouble. The fact is you’re not righteous, I’m not righteous, none of us our righteous. Yet we need righteousness to protect our vital spiritual organs. Which is why God is so gracious in offering to us His righteousness through faith.

But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; Isaiah 64:6

There is none righteous, no, not one… Romans 3:10

And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. Philippians 3:9.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

God has given us peace. This peace is a reflection of the good news of the gospel. Christ came and died for our sins that we might have eternal life. This good news brings peace. Therefore we should confidently experience God’s peace as we walk around spreading it to others. We should tell others about the freedom that they can obtain through Christ.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

4. Shield of Faith

Faith is the shield that we need to block the fiery darts of the enemy. Faith is instrumental in helping us win the battle against the enemy because faith gives us the power to overcome.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God… Ephesians 2:8

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 John 5:4

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Romans 12:3

5. Helmet of Salvation

This helmet is designed to protect your mind from the evil of the enemy. It delivers you from sin and its dreadful consequences. This is a piece of armor that guarantees that nothing can separate you from the love of the Father. If you accept it salvation is yours and the enemy can never take it from you.

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13-14

6. Sword of the Spirit

The sword of the spirit is God’s word. It is a powerful piece of protective armor. It helps us fight against the temptations and the lies that the enemy will send our way. When Jesus was tempted by the devil it was the sword of the spirit that caused Him to overcome.

Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. Matthew 4:10-11

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; Ephesians 6:17

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

How To Put on the Armor of God

Every piece of the armor of God is a gift. You don’t have to pay for it or barter for it. It is a gift that God freely gives to you. The only thing that is required of you is that you take the time to put it on.

This is something that is extremely necessary. It makes no sense to have access to protective gear and never take advantage of it. This is why the Apostle Paul makes it clear that the armor of God is something that we must put on.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-13

Yet the question is, how do you put on the armor of God? Well, the best way to do that is to simply go to God in prayer and ask Him to help you. The following prayer is an example of a prayer you can pray to put on God’s armor.

Prayer for the Armor of God

Dear God,

Thank You for the protection You have provided me in Ephesians chapter 6. I pray that You will place upon me Your full armor so that I can stand victorious in the midst of spiritual warfare.

Please place around my waste the belt of truth. Help me to spend more time with You each and every day so that I can learn more and more about truth. Let me embrace truth so that it can be my safeguard.

Place upon me the breastplate of righteousness. I recognize that my righteousness is non existent and that I am in desperate need to be covered by yours. Help my thoughts and my actions to be reflections of your righteousness. When the enemy comes to accuse me let his accusations fall upon deaf ears because of your righteousness oh God.

Lord cover my feet with the gospel of peace. Help my feet to lead me into places where I can bring the good tidings of peace and salvation to others.

Bless me with the shield of faith. Help the measure of faith that You’ve already given me to multiply so that my shield can ward off all of the fiery darts of the enemy. Help my faith to be unmovable and unshakeable.

Please protect my head with the helmet of salvation. Help my mind to be so engrossed with the fact that you’ve died for me and secured a place for me in eternity that no lie or evil thing the enemy tries to tell me can ever mess with my head. Let Your helmet of salvation be a strong fortress around my mind.

And finally God, I ask that You would equip me with the Sword of the Spirit. Help me to consistently study Your word and commit it to memory. Let the power that is found in those holy pages fill my spirit so that I can conquer every temptation the enemy sends my way with an, “it is written.”

God you know my weaknesses, so I ask that You will give me the strength to put on Your full armor so that I might stand.

Taking Action and Moving Forward in Faith

Putting on the full armor of God is so important, which is why I want to challenge you to put it on each day. Granted, it’s going to take some effort on your part, but through Christ you can do it.
